October is Mi'kmaq History Month

Mi’kmaq History Month is held every October in Nova Scotia. It is a time to recognize and celebrate Mi’kmaw culture and heritage, beginning with Treaty Day on October 1. Treaty Day commemorates the Treaty of 1752 between the people of Mi’kma’ki and the Crown. This treaty was intended to show the Crown’s intentions to make peace, provide trading posts, and protect the land and way of life for the Mi’kmaw people.

This year’s Mi’kmaq History Month theme is Innovations and Legacies, highlighting Mi’kmaw knowledge that has grown over many generations, resulting in a sophisticated relationship with the seasons, cycles, animals and plants of Mi’kma’ki, which are at the core of Mi’kmaq culture and language. Schools will be acknowledging the importance of Mi’kmaq history, culture and language with learning opportunities this month and throughout the year.

On September 29, Grade Primary to 5 music teachers took part in an inservice with noted Mi’kmaq artist and craftsman Todd Labrador, focusing on language, drumming and the healing power of music. In October, Mr. Labrador will also lead workshops with students in the Native Student Advisor Program, and in several middle level and high school classrooms across the region.

Several schools will be taking part in a flag-raising ceremony at Acadia University on October 4, where the Mi’kmaq Grand Council flag will be flown permanently. Students will join with musicians and drummers to sing the Mi’kmaq Honor Song.

This month and throughout the year, we recognize the contributions of Mi’kmaw people to Nova Scotia and the importance of treaties as both the building blocks of Canada and living documents that affect everyone in Canada today.
